In case you haven't heard, CBS Late Show host David Letterman told a "little story" on Thursday to his live studio audience. He talked about finding a package that someone had left in his car. In the package was evidence that he "did some terrible, terrible things" and a letter demanding $2 million. He immediately contacted the authorities and the person was caught.
Letterman looked directly into the cameras and to the audience and explained that he had sex with some of his co-workers. He made no apologies or excuses for his behavior. His did not admit to being at fault nor did he blame anyone else.
This had not leaked to the press so he had control over the message, timing and delivery. Some people think he did the right thing and respect him for confessing publicly. Others think it is just a ploy to improve a bad situation. What are your thoughts on how this was handled?
I find it interesting that early this morning I was able to view a YouTube video of the entire story from his show. Tonight when I want to link it to this post, I cannot locate the same version. This CBS news story is the only one I can find.

Wow! I hadn't heard about this.
ReplyDeleteI can see his confession both ways. Initially after reading this post and watching the video, I found myself admiring him for having the guts to announce this publicly during the middle of his show. It takes a lot of heart, no matter how famous or how unrecognizable you are, to admit to something like this.
Now to say some of his motivation for this confession didn't stem from his hope to stop it from turning into a worse situation would, I think, be very unlikely. Most people, were they in that same situation, would like to deter continuing controversy and deal with it early on so it's not hanging over their heads for a long time. But is that necessarily a bad thing?

ReplyDeleteI think he is handling the situation the best he can. Basically he was caught and the drama would have been leaked to the public. Why not admit to what he has done, thus creating more press, which would lead to more popularity. Even though I do not agree on what he did.
ReplyDeleteLike I stated above--when he made the announcement first, he had control over the timing, delivery and message. I think that was all to his advantage. He is lucky that none of the information leaked out to the press first.
